Rick’s Soapbox 10-06-08

Monday, October 6th, 2008

A lot of people ask me, “Rick, just what is an ‘Agitainment’, anyway?” Well, I’ll tell you. Agitainment is part entertainment, part agitation. It’s revelry that shakes things up, that breaks a few rules, that does more than simply give a few moments’ diversion (though I hope it does that, too). In short, it’s entertainment that moves you.

In the weeks and months ahead I’ll be presenting stories that are different from what you’ll find on the newsstands today. I’ll be looking back a little — to the great comic literature of our past. But I’ll also be looking forward, too — to a rich new medium of self-expression, and, dare I say it, art.

But above all I’ll be presenting flat-out great comics! Why? Because there’s almost nothing I love more than an old comic book. I love its feel in my hands, the fuzzying newsprint, the worn edges that open to reveal bright colors and yellowing pages, the aroma of wood-pulp rising with each turn of the page. Every comic is a tiny treasure chest of possibilities, beautiful and full of mystery, an object of wonder. It’s what I miss in the ephemeral, infinitely regressible world of the web.

This is why I started Agitainment.Comics, to give you something to hold onto. I won’t presume to try to duplicate the sensory fullness of reading an actual comic, but I hope to give you something that’s different from anything else you’ll find out there. And I hope that, as you might with a treasured comic, you’ll want to collect the stories I present here, keep them, and pore over them again and again.

With that in mind, at Agitainment.Comics you’ll have free and unfettered access to the archives. Let me say that again, friend: It’s all free! The content on this site is for you to read and re-read, to enjoy and to share with your friends. And it doesn’t cost a dime.

If you like what you see, you can help support Agitainment.Comics by making a donation, or by visiting the store and buying original artwork, or even by offering to commission new work. But more importantly, you can support Agitainment.Comics by spreading the word to everyone who loves comics and art and good storytelling.

That’s what will make all the difference.

Ex animo!
Rick
