Explorers Guild Show

The Explorers Guild: Rick Ross and Explorations in Graphic Fiction

Showed August 27 to December 15, 2016 at the Begovich Gallery of California State University, Fullerton.

This exhibition examines the work of filmmaker, illustrator, and graphic novelist Rick Ross. A vital component of the exhibition is Ross’ illustrations for The Explorers Guild: Volume One: A Passage to Shambhala (Atria Books; October 2015), a part novel, part graphic novel created in collaboration with filmmaker Kevin Costner and novelist Jon Baird. Through four years and over 600 pages of illustration, Ross developed a style of graphic storytelling inspired by the rich tradition of early 20th-century comics and adventure fiction

Also featured is Ross’ short film, Backslide (2003) starring Felicia Day; a selection of his pop culture paintings; drawings from his Agitainment Comics series; artwork for the graphic novelization of Spike TV’s 1000 Ways to Die (for which Ross was the lead artist); and motion comics for DeadTown and the television series Femme Fatales and Dexter.
